Brief Summary of New Bridge Laws

Law 7C You should shuffle your cards after the hand before returning them to the board. You must agree the result first.

Law 61B3 Defenders are allowed to ask one another whether they have revoked. If they have revoked the director must be called. This returns to the situation in 1987.

Law 65B3 Players are now allowed to point out that a quitted trick card is pointing the wrong way. Declarer can do it at any time; dummy or defenders can do it only until the lead is made to the following trick.

Law 64 The criteria for transferring tricks after an established revoke is changed slightly when the revoker did not win that trick. The TD must look to see whether equity has been served so it is very important that he is called.

Law 25B There was a little known law that allows you to make a call and then ‘change your mind’. Now you can still make a ‘mechanical error’ and be allowed to change it (L25A) but you cannot now change your mind.

RECENT CLUB SUCCESSES

Scarborough Congress: Barrie Cavell and Christine Dean won the pre-congress pairs at the Scarborough Congress on 30th July.

Wanborough Cup: Our winners of the Club’s President’s Salver, Mac Derwig, Jane Morton, Richard Currie and Jack Goody went on to win the Wanborough Cup, the Surrey Teams Championship, played on 1st June.

The Metropolitan Cup: This is a teams of 12 competition between the home counties (Kent, Sussex, Essex, Surrey, Berks & Bucks) that was played at Ardingley on Sunday 18th May this year. It is split into three divisions and players are invited to play for Surrey. Wendy Miller, Varda Derwig, Penny MacLeod & Russell Allan were invited to play in the Division B team and they won their division.

Home Counties League: This is a league played at the Young Chelsea Club in London on a few evenings over the winter period. It involves a team of eight players and there are two teams from London, one from Surrey, Kent and Middlesex. The captain is Barry Stoker and Farnham provides two pairs (normally one pair from Keith Wilson, Rob Cookson and Penny MacLeod, and Jane Morton and Richard Currie play). This Surrey team has not lost a match in 5 years; they won the league five years ago, were runners-up for the last three years and were pleased to win it again this year.

Losing Trick Count
by David Kirkpatrick

Many bridge players use the Losing Trick Count (LTC) to evaluate their hands for trump contracts. In the LTC system the player counts the number of ‘losers’ in each of the four suits held up to a maximum of three; it follows that no hand may have more than twelve losers. In the simplest and most common version, the top three cards in any suit are considered and any card held, except for an Ace or a guarded King or Queen, contributes one loser to the total for that suit.
